SSAS Pension: What is the role of a SSAS Pension Administrator?
The most important role in the establishment of a SSAS is that it must have a scheme administrator.
What Does a SSAS Pension Administrator Do?
The SSAS pension scheme administrator effectively arranges to set up the SSAS. They can be an individual or an organisation.
When we are establishing the SSAS at One Crown Pensions, we usually suggest the SSAS pension administrator role is taken on by the sponsoring employer just to provide a limited liability position.
The scheme administrator is the individual or organisation that is legally responsible for the scheme, and those responsibilities are set out in the Finance Act when you’re establishing the SSAS.
As such, the administrator is expected to make a declaration to HMRC confirming that they understand their responsibilities to the pension scheme and the regulator.
What is the SSAS Pension Administrator Responsible for?
The SSAS pension scheme administrator has some of the following responsibilities:
- Setting up the scheme with HMRC
- Potentially registering the scheme for tax relief at source for personal contributions
- Delivering pension scheme returns, both to HMRC and The Pensions Regulator
- Providing ad hoc reports to HMRC about the scheme
- Ensuring that the scheme information is available to all Members and professional connections attached to the SSAS
- And much more.
As you can see, the role of the SSAS pension administrator can be seen as quite an onerous role and certainly the duties of it are not to be taken lightly. When setting up a scheme administrator, it is possible for the individual to effectively delegate these duties to an experienced pension professional, hence the reason why One Crown Pensions acts in a practitioner role.
One Crown Pensions: Your SSAS Pension Practitioner
At One Crown Pensions, we have the experience and understanding of pensions to ensure that you are in compliance with SSAS requirements.
You Have Ultimate Control Over the SSAS
One of the advantages of being the SSAS pension administrator and one of the key things a lot of our clients like about the role is that you are given ultimate control over the SSAS Pension.
We, of course, hope that you will stay with One Crown Pensions for a very long time because of all the services, ideas, and planning that we can bring to the table, in addition to the regulatory requirements that you need to fulfil for HMRC and The Pensions Regulator.
However, should you (at any time) wish to remove One Crown Pensions as your SSAS practitioner, you can simply resign us at your liberty and appoint another practitioner. After all, you have the ultimate control over the SSAS and who looks after it.
