The answer is, no. A SSAS does not need a professional trustee anymore. Where professional trustees were required to be appointed to the SSAS, this is no longer a requirement.

However, there are potentially some long term advantages to having a professional trustee appointed to the SSAS - particularly if there is only one member. If the member dies, for example, the professional trustee would step into their place to run the SSAS and deal with its affairs post-death.
